lambertay is a name that was brought to England by the ancestors of the lambertay family when they emigrated following the Norman Conquest of 1066. The name lambertay comes from the Old German personal name Lambert or Lanbert. These names are both composed of the elements land, which means land or territory and berht, which means bright or famous.

lambertay Early Origins

The surname lambertay was first found in Surrey where they were descended from the ancient Count of Mons and Louvain, born 940 A.D. died 1004. His three sons were Baldwin, Ralph, and Hugh Lambert. Accompanying Duke William to England at the Battle of Hastings, a Norman chief, Haco Lambert acquired lands from Duke William and is recorded in the Domesday Book. Descended was Henry Fitz Lambert living in 1235 who was a benefactor of the church at Lincoln. Early records of the family were found the in the parish of Kirkby in Malham Dale in the West Riding of Yorkshire. "The church is a large and handsome building, of the style that prevailed in the reign of Henry VII., and is the burial-place of the Lambert family, of whom General Lambert was distinguished, on the side of Cromwell, in the civil war." lambertay Spelling Variations

A multitude of spelling variations characterize Norman surnames. Many variations occurred because Old and Middle English lacked any definite spelling rules. The introduction of Norman French to England also had a pronounced effect, as did the court languages of Latin and French. Therefore, one person was often referred to by several different spellings in a single lifetime. The various spellings include Lambert, Lambard, Lamberth and others.

The Great Migration

Many English families left England, to avoid the chaos of their homeland and migrated to the many British colonies abroad. Although the conditions on the ships were extremely cramped, and some travelers arrived diseased, starving, and destitute, once in the colonies, many of the families prospered and made valuable contributions to the cultures of what would become the United States and Canada. Research into the origins of individual families in North America has revealed records of the immigration of a number of people bearing the name lambertay or a variant listed above: Anne Lambert, who settled in Virginia in 1653.
