Etymology of Krawt

What does the name Krawt mean?

The name Krawt is derived from the Old German word "craft," which means "strong" or "courageous." In the early Middle Ages, Krawt was a popular first name among knights because it referred to strength. In the early 14th century, a number of branches in southern Germany adopted Kraft or Craft as a family name.

Migration of the Krawt family

Between the mid-17th and mid-20th centuries, German settlers arrived in North America by the thousands. Persecution based on religion and poverty were great motivators in this large-scale migration. So too was the opportunity for tenant farmers to own their own land. Ample land and opportunity awaited the settlers who went to such states as Pennsylvania, Texas, New York, Illinois, and California, as well as Ontario and the prairie provinces of Canada. Research into the origins of individual families in North America revealed records of the immigration of a number of people bearing the name Krawt or a variant listed above: Valentin and Matthew Kraft, both of whom arrived in America with their wives and children in 1709. Andreas Krafft landed in Philadelphia in 1728; as did Hans Michael Crafft in 1742.
