The ancestors of the name Kentishbey date back to the days of the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. The name is derived from their residence in the county of Kent. The surname Kentishbey belongs to the large category of Anglo-Saxon habitation names. As a general rule, the greater the distance between individuals and their homelands, the larger the territory they were named after. For example, people who only moved to another parish would be known by the name of their original village, while people who migrated to a different country were often known by the name of the region or country from which they came.

Kentishbey Early Origins

The surname Kentishbey was first found in Berkshire, where they held a family seat from ancient times, some say before the Norman Conquest in 1066 A.D. The first record of this family was at Thatcham, shown in the Domesday Book as King's Land, containing a church and two mills. This is one of Berkshire's oldest villages.

The Great Migration

In an attempt to escape the chaos experienced in England, many English families boarded overcrowded and diseased ships sailing for the shores of North America and other British colonies. Those families hardy enough, and lucky enough, to make the passage intact were rewarded with land and a social environment less prone to religious and political persecution. Many of these families became important contributors to the young colonies in which they settled. Early immigration and passenger lists have documented some of the first Kentishbeys to arrive on North American shores: Humphrey Kent and his wife Joane, who settled in Virginia in 1619; Richard and Stephen Kent who settled in Newbury Port in Massachusetts in 1634; Edward Kent, who settled in New England in 1630.
