Of all the Anglo-Saxon names to come from Britain, Kekwox is one of the most ancient. The name is a result of the original family having lived in the settlement of Kekwick in the county of Cheshire. The surname Kekwox belongs to the large category of Anglo-Saxon habitation names, which are derived from pre-existing names for towns, villages, parishes, or farmsteads.

Kekwox Early Origins

The surname Kekwox was first found in Cheshire where they were Lords of the Manor of Kekewich from very ancient times. "This family, long resident in Cornwall and Deonshire, are said to have been of Lancashire origin. There is a township in Cheshire called Kekwick, from which the name was probably borrowed. The Great Migration

Thousands of English families in this era began to emigrate the New World in search of land and freedom from religious and political persecution. Although the passage was expensive and the ships were dark, crowded, and unsafe, those who made the voyage safely were rewarded with opportunities unavailable to them in their homeland. Research into passenger and immigration lists has revealed some of the very first Kekwoxs to arrive in North America: John Kekewich, who was recorded in the census of Ontario, Canada in 1871; as well as a family of the name Kekwick who landed in North America in 1890..
