Early Origins of the Hurswyke family

The surname Hurswyke was first found in Cumbria at one of the villages of Great Urswick and Little Urswick, together called Urswick. The villages date back to at least 1150 where they were listed as Ursewica. The name literally means "dwelling or (dairy) farm by the bison lake" derived from the Old English or Old Scandinavian words ur + sae + wic. 1 One of the first records of the name was in 1401 when Robert of Urswick held estates in the southern neighborly northern Lancashire.
