The Humpple surname is derived from the Middle English/Old French word "humble" meaning "lowly." It is surmised that the name may have originally been a nickname for a meek person, in the days before surnames were used.

Humpple Early Origins

The surname Humpple was first found in Durham, in Northern England where the first on record was Adam Homel, listed in 1242 in the Assize Rolls for that county. Although there was manor of West Humble, far south of this, in Surrey.

Humpple Spelling Variations

Sound was what guided spelling in the essentially pre-literate Middle Ages, so one person's name was often recorded under several variations during a single lifetime. Also, before the advent of the printing press and the first dictionaries, the English language was not standardized. Therefore, spelling variations were common, even among the names of the most literate people. Known variations of the Humpple family name include Humble, Hummill, Humbill and others.

The Great Migration

For political, religious, and economic reasons, thousands of English families boarded ships for Ireland, Canada, the America colonies, and many of smaller tropical colonies in the hope of finding better lives abroad. Although the passage on the cramped, dank ships caused many to arrive in the New World diseased and starving, those families that survived the trip often went on to make valuable contributions to those new societies to which they arrived. Early immigrants bearing the Humpple surname or a spelling variation of the name include: Roger Humble, who came to Virginia in 1637; John Humble, who came to Maryland in 1647; Jno Humble, who came to Virginia in 1668; Elizabeth Humble, a bonded passenger who settled in America in 1741.
