Holdcastle Early Origins

The surname Holdcastle was first found in Cheshire at Oldcastle, a township, in the parish of Malpas, union of Wrexham. The township "took its name from an ancient castle, which was destroyed before 1585. " [1]CITATION[CLOSE]
Lewis, Samuel, A Topographical Dictionary of England. Institute of Historical Research, 1848, Print.
One of the earliest records of the name was in the year 1389 when Thomas Oldecastell held the estates in this shire. Over in Almeley, Herefordshire a branch of the family was found in early times. "The farm there was called Old Castle. Sir John Oldcastle, Lord Cobham, executed in 1417 for his attachment to the Lollards, was a native of the parish." [1]CITATION[CLOSE]
