The origins of the Herytish surname date back to the time of the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. It comes from an early member of the family who was a person who held or occupied land inherited by an ancestor instead of acquiring it by means of the Feudal System. The surname Herytish is derived from the Old English word heritage, which in turn comes from the Old French words eritage and heritage. These words are derived from the Late Latin word heritagium, which comes from the word heres, which means heir.

The Great Migration

Thousands of English families in this era began to emigrate the New World in search of land and freedom from religious and political persecution. Although the passage was expensive and the ships were dark, crowded, and unsafe, those who made the voyage safely were rewarded with opportunities unavailable to them in their homeland. Research into passenger and immigration lists has revealed some of the very first Herytishs to arrive in North America: Roger Eritage, who sailed to Barbados in 1635; Richard Heritage to New Jersey in 1664; W. Heritage to San Francisco, Cal. in 1850 and Mary Houlihan Heritage to Nova Scotia in 1838..
