Halcrowe History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

In the Middle Ages, Viking immigrants settled the shores of Scotland and named many places. The Halcrowe name was then created from one of these place names. They lived in Halcro, in South Ronaldsey, Orkney. The place-name is taken from the place-name Halcro in Caithness, where the family originated.

Early Origins of the Halcrowe family

The surname Halcrowe was first found in Caithness (Gaelic: Gallaibh), the northern tip of Scotland, a Norse/Viking controlled region from the 9th century, which became the Earldom of Caithness, in Scotland where they held a family seat from ancient times, and where family tradition claims that they are descended from the natural son of King Sverrir of Norway. At early times the family migrated to South Ronaldsay where they gave their name to the lands called Halcro. Today Halcrow is a hamlet in northern Manitoba, Canada, but the origin of the place is unknown.

Migration of the Halcrowe family to the New World and Oceana

In their new home, Scots found land and opportunity, and some even fought for their new freedom in the American War of Independence. Some, who remained loyal to the crown went north to Canada as United Empire Loyalists. In this century, the ancestors of both of these groups have begun recovering their illustrious national heritage through Clan societies and other Scottish historical organizations. Early immigration and passenger lists indicate many people bearing the Halcrowe name: Magnus Halcro who settled in Savannah, Georgia in 1774; with his wife Elizabeth and son Hugh; William Hacro settled in Virginia in 1653.
