Gisin Early Origins

The surname Gisin was first found in Norfolk at Gissing, a village and civil parish in the union of Depwade, hundred of Diss. The village dates back to the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was first listed as Gessinga [1]CITATION[CLOSE]

and literally meant "settlement of the family or followers of a man called Gyssa or Gyssi," from the Old English personal name + "-ingas." [2]CITATION[CLOSE]

Gissing Hall is a 15th century mansion in the village of Gissing and today is operated as a hotel and restaurant. The Church of St Mary dates back to c. 1204 and is one of the 124 existing round-tower churches in Norfolk. Conjecturally, the surname is descended from the tenant of the village and lands of Gissing, held by Godric from the King, who was recorded in the Domesday Book census of 1086.
