The Garmeson family's name is derived from the ancient Norman culture that was established in Britain following the Norman Conquest of island in 1066. Their name originated with an early member who was a person of German descent, or a person who was associated with that country through trade or other means. Another derivation of the name suggests that it derives from the Old French given name Germain. This name was borne by a popular French saint from the 5th century, and also meant of the same stock, or related to. Garmeson is a classic example of an polygenetic surname, which is a surname that was developed in a number of different locations and adopted by various families independently.

Garmeson Early Origins

The surname Garmeson was first found in Essex where they had been granted lands after the Norman Conquest in 1066 A.D.

The Great Migration

In England at this time, the uncertainty of the political and religious environment of the time caused many families to board ships for distant British colonies in the hopes of finding land and opportunity, and escaping persecution. The voyages were expensive, crowded, and difficult, though, and many arrived in North America sick, starved, and destitute. Those who did make it, however, were greeted with greater opportunities and freedoms that they could have experienced at home. Many of those families went on to make important contributions to the young nations in which they settled. Early immigration records have shown some of the first Garmesons to arrive on North American shores: Thomas German who landed in Maryland in 1654; John German settled in Pennsylvania, with his wife Margaret, and two daughters, in 1683; Thomas German settled in Maryland in 1660.
