The founding heritage of the Forwoit family is in the Anglo-Saxon culture that once dominated in Britain. The name Forwoit comes from when one of the family worked as a swineherd, a person who tended hogs. Checking further we found the name was derived from the Old English elements for, which meant pig or hog, and weard, which meant guard or watchman.

Forwoit Early Origins

The surname Forwoit was first found in Cheshire where they held a family seat from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.

The Great Migration

Thousands of English families in this era began to emigrate the New World in search of land and freedom from religious and political persecution. Although the passage was expensive and the ships were dark, crowded, and unsafe, those who made the voyage safely were rewarded with opportunities unavailable to them in their homeland. Research into passenger and immigration lists has revealed some of the very first Forwoits to arrive in North America: Ambrose and Mary Forward who settled in Virginia in 1735 and later moved to Maryland.
