The ancient Scottish kingdom of Dalriada is thought to be the home of the ancestors of the Egelischan family. Their name comes from someone having lived in the old Barony of Eaglesham in the county of Renfrew (now part of the Strathclyde region), Scotland, which originated in the 13th century.

Egelischan Early Origins

The surname Egelischan was first found in Renfrewshire (Gaelic: Siorrachd Rinn Frił), a historic county of Scotland, today encompassing the Council Areas of Renfrew, East Renfrewshire, and Iverclyde, in the Strathclyde region of southwestern Scotland, where they held a family seat from very ancient times.

The Great Migration

Dalriadan families proliferated in North Ameri ca. Their descendants still populate many communities in the eastern parts of both the United States and Canada. Some settled in Canada as United Empire Loyalists, in the wake of the American War of Independence. Families on both sides of the border have recovered much of their heritage in the 20th century through Clan societies and highland games. Analysis of immigration records indicates that some of the first North American immigrants bore the name Egelischan or a variant listed above: Mr. Eagleson landed in Boston Massachusetts in 1768.
