The ancient Scottish kingdom of Dalriada is thought to be the home of the ancestors of the Danyelston family. Their name comes from someone having lived near a place named Danzielstoun, in Scotland. Thus Danyelston is a local surname, which belongs to a category of hereditary surnames derived from pre-existing names for towns, villages, parishes, or farmsteads.

Danyelston Early Origins

The surname Danyelston was first found in Renfrewshire, at Danzielstoun, in the parish of Kilmalcolm. "The manor took its name from some man named Daniel, and it bore this name as early as the reign of Malcolm IV", [1]CITATION[CLOSE]

The Great Migration

Dalriadan families proliferated in North America. Their descendants still populate many communities in the eastern parts of both the United States and Canada. Some settled in Canada as United Empire Loyalists, in the wake of the American War of Independence. Families on both sides of the border have recovered much of their heritage in the 20th century through Clan societies and highland games. Analysis of immigration records indicates that some of the first North American immigrants bore the name Danyelston or a variant listed above: Sam Denniston who settled in New York in 1774; and John Denniston, who arrived in Philadelphia in 1802.
