The lineage of the name Coulboourne begins with the Anglo-Saxon tribes in Britain. It is a result of when they lived in Colburn, a village and civil parish near Catterick in the North Riding of Yorkshire. It is from the place-name that the family name is derived.

Early Origins of the Coulboourne family

The surname Coulboourne was first found in Yorkshire where one of the first of the name on record was Geoffrey Colburn in 1208 who held estates in the North Riding of Yorkshire in the parish of Catterick, but historians conjecturally relate the name to Colbrand, a name which appeared in the Domesday Book in the county of Devon.

Migration of the Coulboourne family to the New World and Oceana

To escape the unstable social climate in England of this time, many families boarded ships for the New World with the hope of finding land, opportunity, and greater religious and political freedom. Although the voyages were expensive, crowded, and difficult, those families that arrived often found greater opportunities and freedoms than they could have experienced at home. Many of those families went on to make significant contributions to the rapidly developing colonies in which they settled. Early North American records indicate many people bearing the name Coulboourne were among those contributors: William Colburn of Boston who came in Winthrop's fleet in 1630. He was elected Deacon and ruling elder of the Colony's Church. John Colburn of Dedham, Massachusetts, settled in 1640 and had five sons.
