Buly Early Origins



The surname Buly was first found in Dumfriesshire (Gaelic: Siorrachd Dhn Phris), a Southern area, bordering on England that today forms part of the Dumfries and Galloway Council Area, where one of the first records of the name was William Bully was listed as a bailie of Edinburgh in 1403. Bulley is a hamlet in Gloucestershire, almost 7 miles (11 km) west of the city of Gloucester.

Many Scots were left with few options other than to leave their homeland for the colonies across the Atlanti c. Some of these families fought to defend their newfound freedom in the American War of Independence. Others went north to Canada as United Empire Loyalists. The ancestors of all of these families have recently been able to rediscover their roots through Clan societies and other Scottish organizations. Among them: Captain Bulley who settled in Boston Mass in 1763; Mathew Bulley settled in Maryland in 1727; John Bulley arrived in Philadelphia in 1866. But perhaps the first settler was Nicholas Bully who settled in Maine in 1630. George Bully settled in Maryland in 1730..
