Bavaria, Germany is the ancestral home of the Broennenmayr family. The Broennenmayr surname evolved as a local name for a family that lived in Bavaria. The name Broennenmayr is a compound name, composed of the elements Brunner and mayr, which each have different origins. The portion Brunn is a baptismal name meaning "the descendant of Brune". Further research revealed that the name is derived from the Old German word brunno, which means natural spring or well. Broennenmayr was also a local name and was given to a person who lived near a spring or well.

The Great Migration

Thousands of German settlers came to North America between the mid-17th and mid-20th centuries. The hardships of the long voyage were balanced by the opportunity to escape poverty and religious persecution. The descendents of these settlers still populate the states of Pennsylvania, Texas, New York, Illinois, and California. Many also live in Ontario and the prairie provinces of Canada. An inquiry into the early roots of North American families has revealed a number of immigrants bearing the name Broennenmayr or a variant listed above: Adam Brunnenmeyer, who came to Illinois in 1860.
