The origins of the Welsh name Boothroode go back to the ancient Celtic culture that existed in the hills and Moors of Wales. The forbears that initially held the name Boothroode once lived in the settlement called Boothroyd in the West Riding of Yorkshire. However, there was also a place called Bodwrda in the county of Carnarvon. The surname Boothroode belongs to the category of habitation names, which are derived from pre-existing names for towns, villages, parishes, or farmsteads.

Boothroode Early Origins

The surname Boothroode was first found in Anglesey (Welsh: Ynys Môn), a Welsh-speaking island, and present day County of Isle of Anglesey, located at the northwestern extremity of Wales, where they held a family seat from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.

This variety of spellings began almost immediately after the acceptance of surnames within Welsh society in the 15th century. This process was problematic in that many of the highly inflected sounds of the native language of Wales could not be properly captured in English. Some families, however, did decide to modify their own names to indicate a branch loyalty within the family, a religious adherence, or even a patriotic affiliation. The name Boothroode has seen various spelling variations: Boothroyd, Bodwrd, Boddwryd, Bodwryd and others.

The Great Migration

The Welsh migration to North America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries contributed greatly to its rapid development. These migrants were in search of land, work, and freedom. Those Welsh families that survived the long ocean journey were critical to the development of new industries and factories, and to the quick settlement of land. They also added to an ever-growing rich cultural heritage. A search of the immigration and passenger lists has shown a number of people bearing the name Boothroode: Abraham Boothroyd who settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1845; followed by Charles and Benjamin in 1856 and 1869 respectively; Jabez Boothroyd settled in Baltimore Maryland in 1823..
