Belbey Early Origins

The surname Belbey was first found in Yorkshire where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor. The Saxon influence of English history diminished after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The language of the courts was French for the next three centuries and the Norman ambience prevailed. But Saxon surnames survived and the family name was first referenced in the 13th century when they held estates in that shire.

A great portion of these settlers never survived the journey and even a greater number arrived sick, starving, and without a penny. The survivors, however, were often greeted with greater opportunity than they could have experienced back home. These English settlers made significant contributions to those colonies that would eventually become the United States and Canada. An examination of early immigration records and passenger ship lists revealed that people bearing the name Belbey arrived in North America very early: Adele Catherine Belby, aged 5, who arrived at Ellis Island from Nassau, Bahamas, in 1919; and Joe Belby, aged 38, who arrived at Ellis Island, in 1918..
