After the 16th century, a period of widespread European migration, the Bebenbourg name spread into neighboring regions as members searched for occupations in religious, military, or political service. As a result, numerous different branches of the family name emerged. The two major houses of the name Bebenburg were found in Franconia. The house of Bebenburg proper, which stemmed from the von Kuchenmeister family, held their seat in the canton Rhoen-Werra. The other house, which descended from the Karg von Bebenburg, held their seat in the canton of Gebuerg.
