The origins of the name Beadwel are with the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. The name is derived from the name of a medieval court official called a beadle. A beadle performed similar duties to those of a bailiff in a modern court of law, as well as acting as a sort of town crier, and later as a constable of the parish.

The Great Migration

Thousands of English families in this era began to emigrate the New World in search of land and freedom from religious and political persecution. Although the passage was expensive and the ships were dark, crowded, and unsafe, those who made the voyage safely were rewarded with opportunities unavailable to them in their homeland. Research into passenger and immigration lists has revealed some of the very first Beadwels to arrive in North America: John Beadle who settled in Barbados in 1634; John and Gabriel Beadle, who settled in Virginia in 1608; twelve years before the "Mayflower"; Philip and Robert Beadle settled in Virginia in 1653.
