Bavaria, Germany is the ancestral home of the Batzentorf family. The Batzentorf surname evolved as a local name for a family that lived in Batzendorff, Bavaria. The family name is derived from the Old German word batz, meaning mound or pile. Batz was used as a colloquialism referring to a mound of gold, and eventually was used to refer the coins of gold of which the pile was made, and as a nickname for a rich person. Dorff, the second component of the name, means village.

The Great Migration

Thousands of German settlers came to North America between the mid-17th and mid-20th centuries. The hardships of the long voyage were balanced by the opportunity to escape poverty and religious persecution. The descendents of these settlers still populate the states of Pennsylvania, Texas, New York, Illinois, and California. Many also live in Ontario and the prairie provinces of Canada. An inquiry into the early roots of North American families has revealed a number of immigrants bearing the name Batzentorf or a variant listed above: settlers who traveled to and established themselves along the eastern seaboard of the United States and in Canada during the 18th and 19th centuries.
