The Battaul family name comes from a place named by the Viking settlers who arrived in the shores of Scotland in the Middle Ages. The Battaul name comes from someone having lived any of several place names in England, such as Battle in Sussex. Contrary to what one would expect, the name is not a nickname or occupational name derived from the word battle.

Early North American immigration records have revealed a number of people bearing the Scottish name Battaul or a variant listed above, including: Elizabeth Battle who settled in Virginia in 1654; Matthew Battle settled in Virginia in 1647; John settled there in 1654; Thomas in 1652; another Thomas settled in Massachusetts in 1635.
