Awdritt is a name whose history dates far back into the mists of early British times to the days of the Anglo-Saxon tribes. It is a name for a person noted for giving good counsel.

Awdritt Early Origins

The surname Awdritt was first found in Cambridgeshire, at Aldreth, a hamlet that dates back to 1170 when it was listed as Alrehetha in the Pipe Rolls. The name literally means "landing-place by the alders" from the Old English words for "alor" and "hyth." [1]CITATION[CLOSE]

However the surname dates back further and is recorded in the Domesday Book as Aldreth and Ealdred as holding lands under the Norman King William soon after the Conquest in 1086. In fact, Aldred was a famous ecclesiastic, who was Bishop of York from 1044-1060, and Archbishop of York from 1060-1069, and it was he who crowned the Conqueror.

Awdritt has been recorded under many different variations, including Aldred, Aldreth, Aldret and others.

The Great Migration

For many English families, the political and religious disarray that shrouded England made the far away New World an attractive prospect. On cramped disease-ridden ships, thousands migrated to those British colonies that would eventually become Canada and the United States. Those hardy settlers that survived the journey often went on to make important contributions to the emerging nations in which they landed. Analysis of immigration records indicates that some of the first North American immigrants bore the name Awdritt or a variant listed above: Robert Aldred, who settled in Virginia in 1635; William Aldred arrived in Philadelphia in 1834 and moved westward.
