The Strathclyde-Briton people of ancient Scotland were the first to use the name Appilebie. The Appilebie family lived in various places so named in England and Scotland. Appleby is derived from the old Norse apall, or "apple" combined with byr, meaning "farm."

Early Origins of the Appilebie family

The surname Appilebie was first found in Westmorland, where they held a family seat as Lords of the manor of Appleby from about the year 1250, which later became the county town of Appleby. This town was frequently sacked and plundered and was a favorite target of raids north of the border.

Migration of the Appilebie family to the New World and Oceana

As the persecution of Clan families continued, they sailed for North America in increasing numbers. In most cases, they found the freedom and opportunity they sought. Land was often available and the American War of Independence allowed Scots an opportunity to solidify their independence from the English crown. These settlers and their ancestors went on to play essential roles in the forging of the nations of the United States and Canada. Among them: William Apleby, who settled in Virginia in 1623; Robert Appleby settled in Nova Scotia in 1774; John Appleby settled in Virginia in 1652; William Appleby settled there in 1645.
