The Norman Conquest of England in 1066 added many new elements to an already vibrant culture. Among these were thousands of new names. The Twemlow family lived in Cheshire, at Twemlow.
The surname Twemlow was first found in Cheshire where they held a family seat from very ancient times as Lords of the manor of Hatherton in that shire. Conjecturally they are descended from William Malbank who was holder of the village of Hatherton at the time of the taking of the Domesday Book in 1086, a census initiated by William the Conqueror after his conquest of England in 1066 A.D.

The name has been spelled Twemloe, Twemlow, Twemlowe, Twamley and others.
