The Pobjoy surname is derived from the Old French word "papegai," which meant "parrot." There were archery contests in the Middle Ages where bowmen shot at a wooden parrot or "popinjay" on a pole, and as such the term also came to be used for a winner, in sports.
The surname Pobjoy was first found in Staffordshire where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor. The Saxon influence of English history diminished after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The language of the courts was French for the next three centuries and the Norman ambience prevailed.
