The name probably meant "farmstead by a hill called Penning," from the Celtic "penn," meaning hill + the Old English "-ing" + "tun." 2 One of the earliest records of the surname was Sir Gyles Penyston (fl. 13th century), whose ancestors held a family seat in Cornwall and is an ancestor of the Penyston Baronets. Aanother early reference of the name is "Thomas de Penyston, who is said to have flourished at Truro, co. Cornwall, in the reign of the Conqueror." 3
