The place name dates back to the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was first listed as Pengestone. 1 By 1199, the place name was known as Peningeston. The name probably meant "farmstead by a hill called Penning," from the Celtic "penn," meaning hill + the Old English "-ing" + "tun." 2 One of the earliest records of the surname was Sir Gyles Penyston (fl. 13th century), whose ancestors held a family seat in Cornwall and is an ancestor of the Penyston Baronets. Aanother early reference of the name is "Thomas de Penyston, who is said to have flourished at Truro, co. Cornwall, in the reign of the Conqueror." 3
