Early Origins of the Pebday family

The surname Pebday was first found in Durham, where they held a family seat. They were most likely one of those rebellious northern English Norman clans which were 'wasted' by Duke William of Normandy when he took an army of 40,000 north as far as the Scottish border in 1070. Their name appears to have been Pappedae, from a Norman noble who arrived at Hastings with the Duke in 1066. Escaping north into Scotland their ancient Clan seat was at Dunglass but they also held estates in Haddington. Their close relationship to the Hume Clan in these ancient times leads one to believe there was a blood relationship rather than a pact of mutual protection.
