The name Padinson arrived in England after the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Padinson family lived the given name Patrick. It was largely as a result of the fame of the 5th century Romano-British saint of this name that Patrick was such a popular given name in the Middle Ages. It derives from the Latin Patricus, meaning the son of a noble father, a member of the patrician class, and a member of the Roman hereditary aristocracy.
The surname Padinson was first found in the East Riding of Yorkshire where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor of Cherry Burton. Conjecturally they are descended from the holder of this village, Beverly, who held the King's Lands and those of the Archbishop of York in that area as shown in the taking of the Domesday Book census in 1086 A.D.
This web page shows only a small excerpt of our Padinson research. Another 158 words (11 lines of text) covering the years 1305, 1413, 1464 and 1475 are included under the topic Early Padinson History in all our PDF Extended History products and printed products wherever possible.
A multitude of spelling variations characterize Norman surnames. Many variations occurred because Old and Middle English lacked any definite spelling rules. The introduction of Norman French to England also had a pronounced effect, as did the court languages of Latin and French. Therefore, one person was often referred to by several different spellings in a single lifetime. The various spellings include Pattinson, Patinson, Pattonson, Patonson, Pattenson and many more.

Many English families left England, to avoid the chaos of their homeland and migrated to the many British colonies abroad. Although the conditions on the ships were extremely cramped, and some travelers arrived diseased, starving, and destitute, once in the colonies, many of the families prospered and made valuable contributions to the cultures of what would become the United States and Canada. Research into the origins of individual families in North America has revealed records of the immigration of a number of people bearing the name Padinson or a variant listed above: Thomas Pattinson who settled in New York State in 1804.
