The name Lorymer is Anglo-Saxon in origin. It was a name given to a person who worked as a lorimer which is an Old French word used to refer to those individuals who made stirrup irons, spurs and other metal articles that people used with horses.
As an occupational name, records of the name are widespread and in early records more often than not, the name was seen in its Lation form as by example, the Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae listed Robert and John Lauremarius, Normandy 1180-1195. 1
However one source notes that the name could have been derived from "Goscelinus Loremarius, one of the Conqueror's tenants in chief, mentioned in Domesday [Book], co. Essex. " 2
The surname Lorymer was first found in Essex where the aforementioned Goscelinus Loremarius was listed shortly after the Conquest.
The Hundredorum Rolls of 1273 listed Adam le Lorimer, Salop (Shropshire); Richard le Lorimer, Essex; Thomas Lormar, Essex; and William Lorinar, Oxfordshire. 4

Thousands of English families boarded ships sailing to the New World in the hope of escaping the unrest found in England at this time. Although the search for opportunity and freedom from persecution abroad took the lives of many because of the cramped conditions and unsanitary nature of the vessels, the opportunity perceived in the growing colonies of North America beckoned.
