The Kosmas surname is derived from the Polish personal name Kosma. The popularity of this name is believed to be due to St. Cosmas (Kosmas), a 4th century martyr who was sacrificed along with his brother Damyon in the 4th century.
The surname Kosmas was first found in Silesia, where the name gained a significant reputation for its contribution to the emerging mediaeval society. Perhaps the first record of the name is of a Kosmowski listed as the owner of a farm near Hainbach, Esslingen, in the year 1303. Hans Kosmowski was the mayor of Ebingen in 1448.
