The surname Kilcline comes from the Irish Mac Giolla Chlaoin, anglicized early on as MacGilleclyne.
The surname Kilcline was first found in Counties Roscommon and Longford (Irish: An Longfort) traditionally known as Annaly or Teffia, and situated in the Irish Midlands, in Northwest Leinster, where it appears in the Tudor Fiants of the 16th century. The area around Ballykilcline, in the part of Roscommon between Longford and Mayo, was the homeland of the sept.
