It was among those Anglo-Saxon tribes that once ruled over Britain that the name Ibotessown was formed. The name was derived from the baptismal name 'Isabel' as in 'the son of Isabel.' 1
The surname Ibotessown was first found in Yorkshire, where they were an important north country family with a rich and unique history. By example, "Denton Park, the property of Sir Charles Ibbetson, Bart., lord of the manor, is a handsome mansion, built in 1760, and situated in a well-wooded park, overlooking the river Wharfe." 2
The Yorkshire Poll Tax Rolls of 1379 included listings as a forename and surname in a wide variety of spellings: Johannes Ibotteson; Ibot Baker; Ibota Waferer; Robertus Ibbotson; and Matilda Ibot, doghter (daughter). 1
John Ibotessone was found in Nottinghamshire in 1392. 3
As one might suspect, the "son" was added at some point as the root of the name was indeed recorded earlier. Ybot and Ibbota were found in Yorkshire in 1286 and 1314, and in 1415 Roger Ybott was registered in London. 3

Thousands of English families boarded ships sailing to the New World in the hope of escaping the unrest found in England at this time. Although the search for opportunity and freedom from persecution abroad took the lives of many because of the cramped conditions and unsanitary nature of the vessels, the opportunity perceived in the growing colonies of North America beckoned. Many of the settlers who survived the journey went on to make important contributions to the transplanted cultures of their adopted countries. The Ibotessown were among these contributors, for they have been located in early North American records: Persival, Elizabeth and Anne Ibotson, who sailed to Virginia in 1623. Arthur William Ibbotson sailed to Philadelphia in 1852; Harvey Ibbotson to Philadelphia in 1854.
