The Herholdt surname is thought to derive from a first name, popular in the Middle ages. A Germanic Hariowald was mentioned by the Roman historian Tacitus. It is also supposed that the name may have evolved from the Middle High German word "heralt," meaning a herald, or messenger.
The surname Herholdt was first found in Bavaria, where an early form of the name was Hörldt. Predating surnames, there is record of a Haroldus in Hamburg in 1251.
