The Anglo-Saxon name Henker comes from the baptismal name for the son of John.
The surname Henker was first found in Oxfordshire, where they were Lords of the Manor in that county from the most ancient times. The family originally settled in England after the Norman Conquest and at that time was registered in the rolls as De Hanacre.

At this time, the shores of the New World beckoned many English families that felt that the social climate in England was oppressive and lacked opportunity for change. Thousands left England at great expense in ships that were overcrowded and full of disease.
