Hening is one of the oldest family names to come from the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. It is derived from the personal name Henning or Hemming. The letters n and m were often regarded as interchangeable in the medieval records.
The surname Hening was first found in Norfolk where they held a family seat from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.
