The surname Haddington was first found in East Lothian, at the Royal Burgh of Haddington, a town that was ceded by King Edgar of England and became part of Scotland in the 10th century.
"It appears to have been a royal residence at an early period, and in various documents is mentioned as having been a demesne town of the kings in the beginning of the twelfth century. Ada, Countess of Northumberland, and mother of Malcolm IV., in 1178 founded here a convent for sisters of the Cistercian order, which she richly endowed, and dedicated to the Virgin Mary; and Alexander II., King of Scotland, was born at this place in 1198." 1
Haddington is also a hamlet in the North Kesteven district of Lincolnshire.
