It is generally thought that the name Guardiola was originally a nickname "probably taken from the city of Guarda, but the oldest one known for it is Estêvão da Guarda, secretary of D. Dinis, The Troubadour King (1261-1325.) In remuneration for the many services received from him, D. Dinis gave to him and his legitimate descendants the couples he owned in Torres Vedras, and by charter of 24-IV-1317 it is clear that he was his clerk, as he is designated in this University Degree. On 9-VI-1320 he made a will in the castle of Lisbon, in which he declared that he was a parishioner of Santa Cruz and S. Mamede." 1

One of the earliest known bearer of the surname Guardiola was Estêvão da Guarda who was official cup-bearer to Prince Dinis in the early 14th century. He is thought to have come to Guarda from Aragon in the late 12th century as part of the train of Queen Santa Isabel. A document dated April 24th, 1317, indicates that Estêvão da Guarda was granted the lands of Torres Vedras by the Prince.
