The rugged west coast of Scotland and the desolate Hebrides islands are the ancestral home of the Denielstone family. Their name indicates that the original bearer lived near a place named Danzielstoun, in Scotland. Thus Denielstone is a local surname, which belongs to a category of hereditary surnames derived from pre-existing names for towns, villages, parishes, or farmsteads.
The surname Denielstone was first found in Renfrewshire, at Danzielstoun, in the parish of Kilmalcolm. "The manor took its name from some man named Daniel, and it bore this name as early as the reign of Malcolm IV", 1 who died in 1165. It is generally thought that the town was founded about 1060.

The hardy Scots who made the crossing settled all along the east coast of North America and in the great west that was just then opening up. At the time of the American War of Independence, many United Empire Loyalists moved north from the American colonies to Canada. Scottish national heritage became better known in North America in the 20th century through highland games and other patriotic events. An examination of immigration records and passenger ship lists revealed that people bearing the name Denielstone arrived in North America very early: Sam Denniston who settled in New York in 1774; and John Denniston, who arrived in Philadelphia in 1802.
