Paul Benoit, born in 1626, son of François and Marie (neé Chatellain), arrived in Quebec on 22nd September 1653. He worked as a carpenter and married Isabelle-Elizabeth Gobinet in Montreal, Quebec on 16th September 1658. 1

In 1643, 109 years after the first landings by Cartier, there were only about 300 people in Quebec. Migration was slow. The fur trade attracted migrants, both noble and commoner. By 1675, there were 7000 French in Quebec. By the same year the French Acadian presence in the Maritimes had reached 500. The French founded Lower Canada, thus becoming one of the two great founding nations of Canada. Amongst the settlers in North America with this distinguished name Debennoiste were Jacques Benoît, who settled with his wife, Sara Mounie and son, Jean, in Carolina in 1695; D. Benoitt, aged 27; settled in Baltimore in 1823; Benjamin Bennoi settled with his wife and 2 children in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1768.
