Early Origins of the Darinton family

The surname Darinton was first found in the West Riding of Yorkshire, at Darrington, a parish, in the union of Preston, Upper division of the wapentake of Osgoldcross. The parish dates back to the Domesday Book of 1086 when it was first listed as Darni(n)tone. 1 At that time, Darrington held a church and a mill. Literally the place name probably meant "estate associated with a man called Deornoth," from the Old English personal name + "-ing" + "tun." 2 Hence, conjecturally, the surname is descended from the tenant of the lands of Darrington, Ilbert de Lacey, who was recorded in the Domesday Book census of 1086.
