The Spanish surname Cerda is of an illustrious and noble descent, originating with the Infant Prince Fernando, son and heir of Alfonso X, "the Wise," King of Castile. It was said that he was born with a full head of hair, "cerda en la pelo." For this reason, his contemporaries gave him the nickname "Infante o Principe de la Cerda," a nickname that later was adopted by his descendants as a surname.
