The surname Bonacorsi was first found in Potenza, anciently called Potentia, a town in Lucania, capital of the province of Potenza, is recorded as one of the coldest towns in Italy. Anciently, the old town, dates back several centuries B.C. In 1694 there was a severe earthquake, a worse one in 1857 which laid the greater part of Potenza in ruins. Another earthquake in 1910 also damaged the town. In those ancient times only persons of rank, the podesta, clergy, city officials, army officers, artists, landowners were entered into the records. To be recorded at this time, at the beginning of recorded history, was of itself a great distinction and indicative of noble ancestry.
