The surname Baust was first found in Saxony, where this family was a prominent contributor to the development of the district from ancient times. The family first appeared in 1301 in the region now called Stendal in Altmark. From here the family moved to Magdeburg and Merseburg. They branched into the Albertine and Ernestine lines.
