The name Bagneld dates back to the days of the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. It is derived from their residence in or around the region of Bagnall, which was in the parish of Stoke-upon-Trent in the county of Staffordshire. 1 2 "The Bagnalls, at present best represented in the district of Stoke - on - Trent, were an ancient family of Newcastle - under - Lyme, members of which filled at various times the office of mayor; the family came into possession of the manor of Hanley 150 years ago. Bagnall is the name of a Staffordshire village." 3

At this time, the shores of the New World beckoned many English families that felt that the social climate in England was oppressive and lacked opportunity for change. Thousands left England at great expense in ships that were overcrowded and full of disease. A great portion of these settlers never survived the journey and even a greater number arrived sick, starving, and without a penny. The survivors, however, were often greeted with greater opportunity than they could have experienced back home. These English settlers made significant contributions to those colonies that would eventually become the United States and Canada. An examination of early immigration records and passenger ship lists revealed that people bearing the name Bagneld arrived in North America very early: Walter Bagnall who settled in Maine in 1626; Walter Bagnall settled in Massachusetts in 1620; John Bagnall settled in Jamaica in 1679; Thomas Bagnall settled in New England in 1654..
