There has been suggestion that the Astarline surname arrived in Britain with the Danes, well before 1066. However, it seems that at least one line of Astarline returned to Britain after 13th century crusades, originating in Strattligen, Switzerland.
Another source claims the name denoted "a merchant who came from the shores of the Baltic having a reputation for honest dealings, giving rise to the word 'sterling.' " 1
The name is often changed "into Stradling, a native of one of the Hanseatic towns. The pure coinage introduced by these in the reign of Richard I. gave rise to the expression Easterling or Sterling money." 2
The Hundredorum Rolls has only one entry for the family, that of (Homines) de Estherlinge, Norfolk, 3 and continuing in Norfolk, we found Walter de Eastherling and Ralph de Eastherling, c. 1300. 4
