A family of Strathclyde-Briton were the first to use the name Ackinsoun. They lived in Berwickshire.
The surname Ackinsoun was first found in Berwickshire an ancient county of Scotland, presently part of the Scottish Borders Council Area, located in the eastern part of the Borders Region of Scotland, where one of the first records of the name was Johannes filius Ade was a "custumar" of North Berwick in 1384 and later appears as John Atkynsoun in 1387. 1

There, Scots found a place where they were generally free from persecution and where they could go on to become important players in the birth of new nations. Some fought in the American War of Independence, while others went north to Canada as United Empire Loyalists. The ancestors of all of these Scottish settlers have been able to recover their lost national heritage in the last century through highland games and Clan societies in North America. Among them: William Aitchison who settled in Colchester county, Nova Scotia in 1875; Andrew Aitchison who settled in Niagara, Lincoln county Ontario in 1852; Thomas Acheson who settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1798.
