Alfownder Early Origins

The surname Alfownder was first found in Essex where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor. The Saxon influence of English history diminished after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The language of the courts was French for the next three centuries and the Norman ambience prevailed. But Saxon surnames survived and the family name was first referenced in the year 1381 when John Alefondre held the estates.

Many of these families became important contributors to the young colonies in which they settled. Early immigration and passenger lists have documented some of the first Alfownders to arrive on North American shores: Robert Alefounder who settled in Virginia in 1717
