Albiny was derived from the Latin word Albinus, which is a derivative of the word albus, which means white. The popularity of the nickname was also influenced, especially in Austria, by the Germanic given name Albuin, composed of the elements alb, or elf, and win which means friend. Albiny was also the name of several minor early Christian saints, including St. Aubin, the Bishop of Angers who died in about 554. It was the name of the Lombard leader who made himself king of Northern Italy and also of a Bishop of Brixen in South Tyrol.
